The Mobitex alert messaging system is a highly successful solution, designed exclusively for a group of companies on Jurong Island. This system allows each company to keep an open eye for emergencies and trouble, and to alert other companies should such situations arise. So sufficient preparation and repatriation can be made in time.
The participants of the project are chemical processing companies such as Air Products, Celanese Singapore, Chevron Oronite, Chemical Industries (Far East), Conoco Indonesia, DuPont Singapore, Eastman Chemical Singapore, Lonza Singapore, Mitsui Bisphenol Singapore, Poval Asia, Sembawang Utilities and Terminals, Singapore MMA & Acrylic Group (SMAG), SUT Sakra, Teijin Polycarbonate and Vopak Terminals Singapore.
After careful considerations, STMD proposed a set-up in each company, comprising of a Mobitex radio modem with antenna, PC-based Alert Messaging Software Application (developed by STMD), and LED display. These are interconnected via the Mobitex network. With this set-up, companies can compose and send messages to each other via the desktop software. Incoming alert messages are conveniently downloaded on the PC and subsequently displayed on the LED display screen with warning sirens.

Our wireless solutions saved the 16 companies the hassle of installing cables. As they are interconnected at all times, real-time critical information can be easily disseminated immediately since there's no need for dial-ups, or establishing individual connections. Due to the reliable in-built characteristics of Mobitex network, there is a certainty of the intended party receiving the messages. Unlike other wireless network such as GSM, SMS or paging, the Mobitex network notifies senders when an alert message fails to transmit. This allows alternative actions to be taken.
With the system firmly in place, these companies (which handle highly sensitive and hazardous chemicals) can alert their proximal counterparts to take preventive measures in their own premises should an emergency arises.
