FedEx Case Study

Expanding the FedEx realm of communications

Federal Express Corporation, also widely known as FedEx, is the world's largest express transportation company. In 1999, FedEx announced its expansion of communication network coverage in Singapore using ST Mobile Data's Mobitex network. Through this network, Fedex will be able to use its existing Digital Assisted Dispatch System (DADS) to obtain island-wide, real-time communication between couriers and its dispatch centre.

Meeting the challenges

DADS is a two-way wireless data communication system used by FedEx to communicate job orders from its dispatch centre to its highly mobile courier team. Prior to the adoption of Mobitex network, FedEx handled its own private frequency that allowed limited communication coverage. Thus, couriers who travel beyond a certain perimeter will be incontactable through DADS. Real-time communication between the courier team and dispatch centre was greatly hindered, as the team was unable to report job status upon completion. Similarly, the centre was unable to establish real-time communication dispatch job order to the courier anywhere within the island.

Reaping the benefits

After FedEx migrated from its own private frequency to ST Mobile Data's Mobitex network, it is able to deliver the highest levels of customer service it promises to its customers. Mobitex network enabled island-wide communication, which means the couriers can now submit report to its centre, in real-time, from virtually anywhere on the island. The dispatch centre can also track all shipments without delay and provide customers with real-time shipment information. With delays in data transmission reduced, operational efficiency and productivity are greatly increased.
